June 21, 2001: This is the house of Samuel Clemens ("Mark Twain") in Hartford, Connecticut. The entrance, off the porte cochere, leads into a beautifully paneled entry hall. The porch above was known as the "Stepping-Out Porch." If Clemens didn't want to see a certain visitor, he went outside on this third-floor porch. The butler could then truthfully tell the visitor that Clemens had "stepped out." |
